It is merely to the become which begins to fall apart, although slap-right up finale rescues it in the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may smartly dialogued, it will have no high problem in living off their very ugly identity.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Movie Bulletin told you “The movie motions at the a fast speed, new conversation is actually advanced and you may characterisations fundamentally effective. Dick Powell and Evelyn Keyes lead the shed skillfully, as investigator are used big aplomb from the that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]

Richard Brody regarding The fresh new Yorker noted “This terse and you will tight flick noir is centered on the fresh romantic and professional disputes of identity character, new violent mastermind (played because of the Knob Powell) behind a sophisticated illegal gambling enterprise. The newest film’s copywriter and you will manager, Robert Rossen, sets up good multidimensional chess game, to own mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an excellent cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) worked in the local casino and you may old a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic program, brand new cast’s suavely managed body language of love and you will possibility, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you may stylishly cocky images (and additionally their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a hidden classic of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Variety gave the movie kudos, composing, “This can be a sensible whodunit, that have attention to scripting, casting and you will camerawork lifting they above the average. Photo possess actions and you may anticipation, and you may particular short joins out-of jokes to add preferences. Expert shows from the Cock Powell, since the a betting home overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, because the an authorities inspector, along with up the rating . Whilst the spot uses a common pattern, the brand new characterizations try fresh as well as the performances suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue are terse and you can topical, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Strange digital camera bases show up on occasion so you can heighten interest and temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling once the movie director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand new blogger and you can affiliate music producer, in addition to aids in making it a softer production.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly a question of viewing Mr. Powell experience his paces stylishly while a huge throw away from actors and stars give him conventional support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable little lady exactly who brings forth this new best in him and you will Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you will slinky vixen which gets your on jams. Thomas Gomez are greasy just like the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does an alternative ready concert tour because a tired police inspector just who eventually shuts the actual situation. Many consuming and you may smoking is completed from the all alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
